Considered by many to be the Twentieth Century's supreme wit, Noel Coward wrote Private Lives to be performed by Gertrude Lawrence and himself. The original production opened at the Phoenix Theatre in September 1930 and the cast also included Laurence Olivier. it is considered one of the best comedies to have been written in England during the first half of the Twentieth Century. Set in France, the plot centres around two divorcees, Amanda and Elyot, who bump into one another whilst on honeymoon with their new spouses, Victor and Sibyl. |
