London
and Broadway's longest-running musical
Entertainment for the whole family! Cats
has enchanted audiences ever since it first opened at the New London Theatre
in 1981. An intoxicating blend of fantasy and drama combined with some
of the most exciting dance ever seen on stage, and of course the wonderful
music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Now, after 21 years, Andrew Lloyd Webber's international award-winning musical, Cats is to close in the West End. The show, which burst onto the New London stage on May 11th 1981 with a cast including Elaine Paige, Brian Blessed, Paul Nicholas, Wayne Sleep, Sarah Brightman and Bonnie Langford, will give its final performance this May after almost 9000 shows and London audience figures of over 8 million. |

The
record-breaking show, based on TS Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical
Cats, became the longest running musical ever to play in the West End
or on Broadway in 1996. Cats has proved just as popular abroad having
been translated into 11 different languages and performed in over 300 cities
worldwide, selling over 50 million tickets. The current cast will hang up
their cat suits on May 11th when the show celebrates its 21st birthday,
marking a fitting end to a hugely successful run. |
